This is my confession. This is my flash light shining on what it’s really like to be a pastor’s wife. Granted, maybe I’m not exactly the average woman married to a pastor, but I bet if you set my lists up against another, you’d be shocked to see how very alike we are.

I would like to continue my confessions with the very best things about being married to a pastor. If you missed the last blog in this series, Confessions of a Pastor’s Wife: What People Don’t Know, click the link, check it out, and leave your thoughts. I love to hear from people who read A White Stone Blog! And by the way, I don’t say this enough, but thanks for reading!

Here is my confession, and in no particular order:

The Top 5 Very Best Things About Being a Pastor’s Wife:

1. The Adventure.

My husband is a college/young adult’s pastor for North, a ministry of Trinity Fellowship Church. Being David’s wife has me leading a more adventurous life than I ever imagined. Together David and I have led people who attend the ministry all over the world with the mission of sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ and loving people. We’ve built houses in the most dangerous city in the world. I’ve taught young children about Jesus while David preached a sermon to their parents in a tiny village in Malawi, Africa. I’ve put together a VBS for trip we led to Managua, Nicaragua. And these are just the adventures we’ve had outside of the States!

Really every day is adventure, because every day we’ve decided to center our lives around the glorious Gospel of Jesus Christ. We are enamored by it. We are driven by it. The Gospel dictates everything that we do, every conversation we have, and ever day that we breath. There is so much purpose and adventure in living a life like that! I’m so thankful for a husband that is motivated by such a wonderful cause. He excites me about the exciting life that is gospel-centered!

2. Straight From The Heart.

Being in ministry with my husband taps into the greatest passions of my heart. It isn’t often that a person’s vocation is actually their heart’s passion. But there is a certainly indescribable fulfillment that happens when you get to do what you are passionate about.

While David and I’s roles in ministry don’t look the same, they bond into one work together. My greatest passions are Jesus, David, and people. Anything that involves those three things taps into a deep place in my heart. My role (or I guess job as David’s wife) isn’t something I do begrudgingly or out of necessity. It’s actually a deeply fulfilling “job” that I am very, very passionate about. It’s one of the most fulfilling things I do in my life.

3. Involves The People You Love The Most.

Similarly, this adventurous role that I am so passionate about actually involves my favorite person in the world. Being a support, help, encourager, counselor, friend, and co-laborer for the person I love the most in the world is wonderful!

I am so proud of my husband. He’s a wonderful husband and a wonderful pastor. It’s so humbling to see why my husband is such a wonderful pastor. This man, that I truly aspire to be like, loves pastoring people because he loves Jesus. And he loves Jesus because he is fully aware of how much Jesus has loved him. He’s knows how much grace and love and sacrifice that Jesus has poured out on his life, and that drives him to love Jesus and consequently be passionate about his profession as a pastor.

I’m honored to love and care for the man that is that kind of leader. And that’s one reason being his wife is so great!

4. It’s An Honor.

Being the wife of pastor and being in ministry is, in my opinion, a great honor and responsibility. All Christians are called to represent Christ and to fulfill His ministry on this earth, but pastor’s have the rep of being the guy that’s out front. That’s at least how they are viewed. And I view it as an honor and responsibility to represent the God that has loved me so much. I hope that my husband, my life, my marriage, and my family can represent the kind of love and sacrifice that I’ve experienced through my relationship with Jesus.

5. It’s The Most Rewarding Job On The Planet.

It’s true, being a pastor’s wife has to be the most rewarding job on the planet. I’m joined to the greatest purpose in life imaginable, invested in precious people, and have a front row seat to see God move on this earth. I can’t imagine doing anything else with my one and only life.

Why The Gospel Still Matters: Has Church Just Become a Social Club?

Today 20% of Americans attended a Christian church. What is church really? Is church really any different that a social club or a support group? Does it really serve a greater purpose in the lives of Christians? What about in your life? Or is it just a time to shake hands and let everyone you know including God that you have crossed “attending church” off your weekly duty list?

The church without the Gospel of Jesus Christ being the central message, meaning, and driving purpose really is no different than an your average social club. And I think it’s time we ask ourselves a very important question. What role does the Gospel play in the church and our Christian community?

I’m not writing this to bash the church. I think the church gets enough bashing. Instead of protecting, providing, and caring for the Bride of Christ, oftentimes Christians are demanding, careless, and withdrawn from their local church. Why? Because we are just in the social club. So we treat the church as such. It’s time that we, as members of the church, make a change.

10 Ways You Can Bring the Gospel Back to Our Churches:

1. Make the Gospel message central.

It’s time we make the Gospel message the central message we communicate at church. There is nothing more important, powerful, and transforming than the love of our God, who sacrificed everything, so that we can have life. This should be the reason for every sermon we preach, every song that we sing, every prayer that we pray, and every person that we hug. This is what the church has that every support group and social club is lacking! This is true and transformational love and grace. This is the only source from which a true community of people can function.

2. Get back to the basics.

Once the Gospel is central in your thinking, it can easily become your reason for everything. Community and church doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, it comes from such a basic place. Everything is about how you can display the Gospel to your fellow church members and the world around you. Lose all the complications. Lose worrying about what people think about you. Church is not about you. It’s not about what you can receive. It’s a place to worship Jesus for the Gospel. And it’s a place to display the Gospel to others.

3. Unconditional Love

Jesus Christ has loved you with unconditional love. Practically, this is something He has called you to do. It’s time to go to church with the purpose of loving Him, others, and your local church in that kind of way. Unconditional love expects nothing in return. You shouldn’t either.

4. Sacrifice

Jesus Christ paid the ultimate sacrifice for each one of us. And His sacrifice was completely from a place of grace. We need to sacrifice for our churches. We need to sacrifice for each other. We need to give our hearts as sacrifices to Jesus. Church can become again, a place of sacrificial worship.

5. Faithfulness

Jesus calls the church the Bride of Christ. One of the most beautiful Gospel displays of a bride is the quality of faithfulness. So be faithful. Do the right thing, when it counts. Fill the church with faithful people. And do it because that’s what Jesus was to you.

6. Vulnerability

True community and church doesn’t work without raw vulnerability. Without it, it’s just another social club to put on your “happy face.” But the “happy face” doesn’t preach the Gospel. The Gospel is about a God who saw even your most messed up, ugly sins and took the punishment you deserved for them. We cheapen the Gospel when we lose our vulnerability at church and with people.

7. Submit to Authority

Ultimately Jesus submitted to God to the point of death. When He looked at the fate of the cross He told His Father, “Not my will, but Your will be done.” As Christians, we are called to submit ourselves to the Lord and to the authority that Christ puts in our lives. The church isn’t a perfect bride. The church isn’t a perfect authority. But it is one that God has given us. Ultimately we love Jesus and His church when we humble ourselves and seek it’s unity and well-being.
Romans 13

8. Healing

As Christians, we have been called to carry out the mission of the Gospel in this world. Jesus reconciled (healed) our relationship with God. The Gospel offers the world physical, relational, and emotional healing. God intended this healing to be extended to the world through His people. We must not lose sight of our mission.

9. An Attitude of Gratefulness

It’s time that we were thankful for the freedom to meet and worship. It’s time we were thankful for the opportunity to better experience Jesus in community. We must be thankful for the opportunity to participate in the Gospel.

10. Show Something Different

A Gospel-Centered church truly shows the world something different. A Gospel-Centered church shows the world a different kind of community than a social club or support group. A Gospel-Centered church can physically demonstrate the love and power and reality of Jesus Christ in the world like nothing else can.

Meditation:
Romans 12:9-21
“Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight. Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.”Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”

Tornadoes have devastated the heart of our country this week. The last several days have shown us some of the most violent storms our nation has ever seen.

Eight hours from where I live Amarillo, in a place called Joplin, Missouri, a tornado touched down Sunday night. It is speculated that this tornado is the most dangerous and deadly tornado in the history of our country. Over a hundred lives are confirmed dead, but there are still nearly 1,500 people missing in this town of 45,000 people.

In moments like these so many of us ask, “Is there anything I can do to help?”. The need in the city is simple, these people need funds to rebuild their lives and regain their health.

North is connected very personally to Mystery Church in Joplin. Mystery Church is an Acts 29 church, and one of the pastors of the church used to live in Amarillo and is a dear friend to one of the pastors at North. This church is one of the few left standing in the aftermath of this deadly tornado, and they are and will be a huge part of the rebuilding of this city. They are meeting the physical and spiritual needs of Joplin in this most crucial time.

The Red Cross and other relief organizations are telling those who want to help to hold off coming to Joplin. Even these organizations are saying the best way people can help is through giving money.

If you are looking for a way to help these families dealing with loss and tragedy, I urge you to give. Mystery Church is a trusted church that is working directly with the city. I urge you to consider giving to them and helping them meet the needs of this community. Tuesday night, North took up an offering for Mystery Church. I’m sure it won’t even make a dent in the need, but every little bit goes directly towards helping people.

If you would like to give to Mystery Church, you can through paypal by clicking on this link.

With the increasing busyness of our culture and the lowering of our attention spans, it is becoming more and more difficult to set aside times in our year as sacred. It can seem difficult to keep Jesus in the center of our lives. This is why this year we as ministry and community of Christians have chosen to take part in the ancient Christian tradition of Lent.

This year for forty days, from Ash Wednesday, March 8, to Easter Sunday on April 24; we are going to take a corporate journey during which we will seek to remind ourselves of the miracle of Easter: that Christ has died, Christ has risen, and Christ will come again. We will be starting a sermon series entitled The Sacred Way, during which we will study the unique messages in the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. But we want our Lent season to go far past our Tuesday gatherings.

Lent is a time when we can collectively set aside distractions like social media and entertainment, for the sake of remembering the One who set aside the comforts of heaven to rescue us. It is a time to fast certain food and drinks, for the sake of being satisfied in the One who became for our sakes. It is a time to pursue our God in scripture and in prayer, for the sake of God’s son who pursued us while we were yet sinners. It is a time to repent of our sin, and rejoice in the hope of resurrection. Lent is a time to center our lives on Jesus.

With all of our hearts, we want the 2011 Easter holiday to be the most meaningful Easter you have ever known in your life. For this reason we ask you to take this journey with us. Pick up a Lent Guide at one of our North services and don’t miss this exciting new series.

“The Gospel of Matthew” – the fist Lent sermon

_______________________________________

For several years, I have participated in some way in Lent. For me, Lent has been a time to focus more fully on the death of Jesus, the power of the cross, and the life I have in in Him. I simply celebrate by taking something out of my life that I turn to for rest, comfort, and/or pleasure. For 40 days, I choose to remember Jesus when I would normally turn to that particular thing. Lent is not just about abstaining from something, rather it’s about choosing to fill yourself with something different- SomeOne eternal and lasting.

Psalm 16:11 ESV
You make known to me the path of life;
in your presence there is fullness of joy;
at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

Do you celebrate Lent? Why or Why not?

The bus lowered us into the ground a little at a time. It rocked over potholes and piles of trash. Slowly we sunk into the cloud of burning trash. The trash swallowed us up, and my heart sank.

We passed cows, goats, men, women, and children picking through the rubbish for something to salvage. Our bus snaked through piles of smoldering garbage that towered high above our bus. The aisles were lined with shanties where the families lived.

My chest felt tight. Something inside of me wanted to jump out of the bus and run back up the hill. It was a burial ground for every object under the sun. I wondered if this place was hell.

Romans 8:38-39
“For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

(The memory verse we prepared for the first day of VBS at Oasis De Esperanza)

photo by Natalie Balderson...my sweet friend 🙂

The following morning our bus took us to Oasis de Esperenza in a neighborhood bordering the dump ground. When the guarded gate opened for us to enter the yard, it was hard to believe I was at a school. Smiling faces pressed against the windows of our bus. I was nearly carried off the bus by several hundred small children hugging, kissing, and hanging from my every limb.

Many of the children had stories of hunger, abuse, and slavery. I heard stories of kidnapping. I heard stories of children being sold for less than I pay for my Starbucks coffee every day. But I’ve never seen such happy children. It was hard to believe that these children lived in the shanties at the dump ground. My week with North putting on a VBS for the children at Oasis de Esperenza was like being in Heaven. The children were full of joy, their eyes full of life, and their hearts full of love.

washing all 500 children's hair!

Pastor Wayne and Elaine MacGouirk once lived in Amarillo, Texas like me. They worked at and attended my church, Trinity Fellowship Church. They used to travel to the dump grounds in Managua, Nicaragua to see those precious children. They saw the children living and working in the dump, they heard the stories, and they saw the death.

Five years ago Pastor Wayne and Elaine started a feeding program and school for the children of Managua. They left their family and comfortable lives, and moved to Nicaragua. Through their ministry a generation of children are being fed and educated that would otherwise not, but that is not why they are there. Pastor Wayne and Elaine want to see these children pass from death unto life.

John 5:24
“Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my (Jesus) word and believes him who sent me (Jesus) has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.”

They brought the children the message of Jesus Christ. Jesus, the One who left His throne in Heaven to come to this place of sin, pain, and death. The One who willingly sacrificed His life. He carried all of our sin, shame, and pain. He came not as a tyrant God to shake His finger at the world, but He humbly took our punishment and pain. Jesus experienced horrific death, so that through faith in Him we can have joy, peace, hope, and relationship with Him. Jesus came to give us life.

He is now shining in the eyes of those precious children. They are better because of food and education. But they have a new life because of Jesus Christ.

Recently, David and I purchased an upright bass. It’s a beautiful instrument. One I see as a beautiful addition to my living room. Something David has always dreamed of owning. It’s been an excellent source of enjoyment and rest for my husband, who quickly has become proficient. And I must say that nothing makes me much happier than watching and listening to him play.

David and I spent the last several days together in Dallas, Texas. The weekend was a chance to catch our breath during a very busy time for us. David had the opportunity to play a couple worship shows with a few friends and put to practice his recent hobby. They were able to play a home show for a young adult’s Bible study and at the Crooked Tree Coffeehouse in uptown Dallas. I know this is a shameless plug, but you should really check out our friend Patrick Schlab’s music here.

A Picture from the show at the Crooked Tree

I had a restful and fun weekend being my husband’s groupie. The music was great and so was the fellowship. We got to spend some time resting together and seeing our sweet friends Chris and Morgan Myers. And we were able to make a visit to The Village Church.

Our sights are now set for North’s Spring Break Mission Trip to Managua, Nicaragua. We leave early on Saturday morning with a team of 24 people from North to do a VBS at a school/feeding program that our church, Trinity Fellowship Church, funds in the Managua’s city dump ground. The school was started by some people from our church to feed, educate, and minster to the children who lived and scavenged in the dump grounds. The school now facilitates almost 500 children! We will also be spending a day at a home for children who have been rescued out of sex trafficking. We will be throwing them a birthday party!

I’m so thankful we had the chance to rest, because I know this trip is going to be one of the most exciting things David and I have ever done! Please pray for us and for our team. 🙂

Lots of love, Readers!

Thousands of precious souls are being forced to sell their bodies against their will today.

“It would be just like Chuck,” my voice sounded funny in the quiet morning. I often say things I’m thinking out loud by complete accident.

Wednesday morning I found myself in my daily ritualistic place of prayer, my comfy chair. I must admit my mind drifted in and out of prayer and sleepy, dreamlike thoughts. I was praying about the Super Bowl. Praying for the thousands and thousands of young women and boys who are bound by chains of sex slavery that were brought to the very state I live. Thousands of precious souls who are being forced to sell their bodies against their will TODAY. Thousands of entertainment seeking sports enthusiasts have flooded into to Dallas, Texas, to watch a football game. Many of those same people will prey on the helpless for a different kind of entertainment today.

As I sat their praying desperately for an answer, my eyes caught sight of my sweet husband doing the same. Today, my husband and father-in-law are at the Super Bowl. My always creative imagination pictured David walking through the crowds of people, brushing shoulders with the hurting. And for a moment, I pictured my husband becoming the main character of the TV show, Chuck, where an ordinary guy suddenly has superhero powers to work for the CIA and save the world. I wish it was that easy.

Today, there are more human slaves in the world than ever before. 27 million children and adults are in forced sexual slavery in the world right now. It’s estimated that every year 300,000 new slaves enter the market. It is also believed that 25% of those in the United States are trafficked through the state of Texas. An estimated of 10,000 young girls and boys in the forced sex industry were present at the last Super Bowl. Only guesses can be made about how many more will be in Dallas today.

Maybe you are shocked. Maybe you have questions. Good. You need to find out the answers. We, especially as Christians, can’t be afraid any longer to open our eyes to the horrors of this world. We can’t live in our suburban homes and attend our churches, and forget about the horrible state of this world, the pain, the abuse, and the hurt. Sex trafficking is one of the biggest global problems of our current day. It’s ugly and dark, but Jesus is light.

1. Get educated. If you don’t know much about this topic, it’s time you researched.

2. Don’t turn your back. Be a light. This is a dark, dark issue. You can shed the light by educating others and praying for God to move on behalf of these precious souls.

3. Don’t let the problem overwhelm you. You can personally be involved in ending sex trafficking. Get involved in a ministry that is working against these efforts. Be a part of ending sex trafficking that takes place in Amarillo, Texas, or wherever you live.
Look into The Texas Human Trafficking Prevention Task Force .

4. Learn the signs of trafficked people. Combat human trafficking.

5. My heart longed for a hero as a I prayed Wednesday morning.
My deep desire to see a man rise up and defend and rescue the helpless was the longing of my heart for a Savior. A man who is mighty for justice and healing. My longing for a world that should be a certain way, a world that isn’t as it should be. We all know this world isn’t the way it should be. It feels broken. It feels like somewhere, something went terribly wrong; now it’s all messed up. We must see, what we all know about this world is horribly true. But the amazing thing is that is the very reason Jesus came. The very reason He knew we needed to be saved from our sin and our pain. He provides the answer for all that is broken. He is the only answer for this world.

So often I find myself in this horrific cycle of white-knuckle Christianity. I can keep myself from the sins of murder and adultery (do-the-right-thing sins), but go down in flames on the insecurity, jealousy, and pride in my mind. Is there a way to truly change your own thoughts? Are Christians doomed to have it all together on the outside, but be shamed by the deepest closets of our hearts with the secret sins of our minds?

Two weeks ago at North, I was standing in the back of the room during worship available to pray with anyone who desired it. A young girl I’d never met before rushed up to me in a panic and asked,
“I have to know, what is joy? How do I even know if I have joy?”

This is a question that David and I have really been talking about. We started a series on joy at North, and I find myself wondering is joy possible? It’s hard to be different, to do the right things, and especially to think the right things. And let’s be honest, you are what you think. What you think about determines the kind of life you live.

As Christians we tend to stop there. We enter the battle of the mind, struggle through our thoughts, and fight until we are weary. But what I am beginning to believe is that we need to unearthed an even deeper problem. We need to stop treating the symptom and find out the problem.

The problem is our joy.

You see, we will ultimately spend our time thinking about the very thing we think we will give us ultimate joy. This means that ultimately we aren’t led by our thoughts; we are truly led by our desires. So I guess the question is, What do you REALLY believe will give you joy? (success, comfort, safety, accomplishment, beauty, perfection…ect?) Those things drive all of your thoughts and ultimately your actions: good and bad.

Once you’ve made that assessment, there are 4 things you need to know about your answer.

1. That thing or person will let you down and ultimately fail you.

2. Because you believe that thing or person will give you what you want (joy), it has control over your happiness, thoughts, and ultimately your actions.

3. Because it has control over your happiness, thoughts, and actions, you have a spiritual worship of that thing or person.

4. You will never be able to experience true and lasting joy. (1 John 2:15-17)

When you think about the pain and suffering of the world, when you face hardships and trials and loneliness, and finding out that true and lasting joy is unattainable can make life feel worthless, pointless, and bleak. As Christians, we have Christ as our example. And luckily, He was well acquainted with grief, loneliness, pain, hardship, abandonment, and ultimately a horrific death. Unbelievably, He did it all with joy. How?

Hebrews 12:1-2 “Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the JOY that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.”

Jesus laid aside everything and went to the cross for the JOY. What is that joy? His love for His Father and His love for you. Ultimately Jesus could do the difficult work of the cross and face every hardship in this life, because His mind was fixed on His joy. His mind was fixed on His love for you.

Proverbs 10:24 “What the wicked dreads will come upon him, but the desire of the righteous will be granted.”

It’s time that we make right the desires of our heart. It’s time we make Jesus the desire of our heart and pour out our love and affection on Him, who is so deserving. He will never fail you or control you. Only He will give you true and ultimate joy.
